LEARN WHY...
How to use this program to help the body restore health to horses with metabolic syndrome(s), and to maintain health in high performance sport horses.
Choose a feed recipe based upon how many pounds of grain you feed your horse now.
Horses tolerated many more pounds of high carbohydrate feeds 50 to 100 years ago than they do now, because there were not so many chemicals in the environment to compromise metabolism. If your horse cannot tolerate very much grain, then your horse is exhibiting carbohydrate sensitivity. The same problem also affects humans, which is why we have epidemic statistics of obesity now.
Reducing the total pounds of grain per day in order to reduce the carbohydrates, and thus control obesity, will also sacrifice the necessary amount of protein needed to drive basal metabolism. We do not want to do this. We, therefore, decrease the carb to protein ratio in the feed, by reducing the carbohydrates. The amount of protein remains the same, and fewer pounds need to be fed.
Example:
If your horse weighs about 1,000 lbs. and currently tolerates around 5 lbs. of grain/day, you would use the recommended amount of Hi-Pro Feed™, which would be 3 lbs., then add 2 lbs. of oat groats for the daily total of 5 lbs.
The amount of oat groats (Vita Royal's only recommended source of additional carbohydrates) can be further adjusted according to energy weight needs, or season of the year. The base protein needs will stay the same. This allows you to further adjust the daily carbohydrate needs to the daily work load of the horse, without sacrificing the much needed protein.
If your horse only gets a handful of oats per day to mix in supplements because he is a very easy keeper, then you would use the Hi-Pro Feed™ recipe at:
• 2 lbs./day for a small horse or pony
• 3 lbs./day for an average size horse of 15-15.2H
• 3.5 lbs./day for a larger horse 16-16.3H
• 4 lbs./day for horses larger than that
This will probably be more than what you are currently feeding now, but the Hi-Pro Feed™ is not a high carbohydrate feed, and we need the protein to fuel basal metabolism that is lacking.
For obese horses (where weight loss is desired) also add to the Hi-Pro Feed™ 1/3 cup pure canola oil or olive oil each feeding. Organic canola oil, or olive oil are preferred but coconut oil is good as well. I prefer canola because it is also a source of diindolylmethane (DIM), which has been shown to detoxify estrogens and xenoestrogens that are prolific pollutants in our environment and significantly impact health. In our biochemists weight loss clinical trials, better success was elicited by canola oil than olive oil. ABC News once had published a story on "The Detox Diet" on their web site (the link is no longer available). It featured the first diet to ever earn a U.S. Patent. Vita Royal's biochemist Linsey McLean earned that patent, and a book articulating that research will be available soon.
In the winter time, for higher energy needs, or to increase weight in a carbohydrate sensitive horse, use a 50/50 blend of canola and corn oil at 1/4 to 1/3 cup each feeding as needed, added to the Hi-Pro Feed™. Again, organic oils are always preferred.
If you have one horse that is extremely carbohydrate sensitive, and others who are moderately carbohydrate sensitive yet need a little extra carbs - more than the Hi-Pro Feed™ alone provides. You can get the Hi-Pro Feed Base™ made up by itself (through Vita Royal or a local mill), and use that alone for the very sensitive horse while adjusting the oat groats or rolled barley to maintain weight. That way you only have two containers of feed in the barn and can customize a ration for any horse.
The feed should be divided into two feedings per day. Three or four feedings are even more beneficial, as horses evolved as grazing animals, have small stomachs for their size and do better with smaller, more frequent meals. If you are currently feeding less grain than what is required with the Hi-Pro Feed™ protocol, it is best to slowly increase the amount over 3 to 5 days.
The Hi-Pro Feed Base™ has 3 ingredients: linseed meal, canola meal, and stabilized rice bran.
It must be fed with a Vita Royal supplement
(which are specifically formulated to fortify this particular base.)
Other brands of supplements will not satisfy requirements of this recipe for your horse. It is not safe to use the feed base alone OR with another brand of supplement.

Helpful hints for choosing specialty supplements:
• For horses manifesting any of the Concurrent Symptoms of EPM, our EPS Formula™ is preferred.
Nutrient Buffer® is always recommended to be used with EPS Formula™, at least in the beginning to get the horse stabilized. Some horses could need Nutrient Buffer® on a continual basis. Depending on the horse.
• For horses with ulcers, digestive upsets, or colic should use Nutrient Buffer® and ideally, the applicable Vita Royal supplement as determined for the horse's greater needs.
• For horses with muscle soreness, arthritis, contracted tendons, epiphysitis, sore back, or as a pre-race or pre-show supplement to help extend stride, UNTIE® is recommended.
• For younger horses in the process of growing and/or broodmares, Equine Plus® Grower™ is recommended.
• From pleasure horses to performance horses, who are in good health and need a maintenance program, Equine Plus® Performance™ is recommended.
• For elderly horses in generally good health, Equine Plus Autumn Years® is recommended.
• For horses who cannot be on the customized feed recipe, as in a boarding situation, but are in otherwise good health, Serenity® is recommended.
This program will allow you to customize not only the feed but the supplements too, to each horse in the barn, regardless of his/her problems or level of health.

• SUPPLY CLEAN WATER
Test your water source 2 times per year, at least for nitrates
Horses are much more sensitive to nitrate toxicity than are humans, and no nitrate should be present in your water. A common water softener will remove low levels of nitrate in many circumstances. Nitrates are extremely toxic to the thyroid gland, and is the major reason for any failure of these programs.
If your water tests positive for nitrate(s), contact your local water company for possible filtration solutions. For the best results: cation exchange (common water softener), followed by anion filter (removes nitrate, phosphate and sulfates), and if you can a charcoal filter. It is advised to rent these units from one of many companies because they can be expensive to purchase. RO (Reverse Osmosis) units are usually very expensive, and waste more water than what it provides. Many companies will try to sell you one of these. These units are not necessary. For the same price, you can purchase a commercial Barnstead distiller that produces 50 gal per day of the purest water, steam distilled. See other filter options too at www.barnstead.com.
We recommend a particular series of filters for those of you without the ability to get the most optimal system mentioned above.
VERY IMPORTANT: The Hi-Pro Feed Base™ recipe is not fortified, and is not to be fed without one of Vita Royal's specialty supplements, specifically formulated to fortify this particular base. Other brands of supplements will not satisfy the requirements of this recipe for your horse. The Hi-Pro Feed Base™ recipe is a base mix for the Vita Royal program ONLY.
NOTE: Prescription antibiotic/anti-protozoal drugs used in combination with a protocol recognizing metabolic syndromes or "Environmentally Induced Illness" will often antagonize it. So, it may take much longer to stabilize the horse, and progress may be slow if at all until drugs are discontinued. Optimally, the program should be used alone if the horse's condition is life threatening, follow the advice of a holistic veterinarian.

We use as much recycled materials for packaging as we can.
From shredded packing material, to reused packing material, to reused/recycled shipping boxes; we are doing our part to eliminate waste and reduce costs.
Through co-operative corporate relationships, these recycled materials come from other companies that receive products primarily for a retail sales floor, and they don't do much outbound shipping. These companies would ordinarily pay to process their packing waste by weight. Instead, we take that cost burden off their hands (and reduce our own costs) by simply reusing these materials.
We are proud to take part in corporate co-operative initiatives that ease the cost of doing business for the whole Vita Royal community.
